Implant Dentistry in San Diego, CA

Losing teeth is no less than a nightmare. There are many reasons you may lose your teeth – poor oral hygiene, accident, injury, trauma, oral cancer, to name a few. Missing teeth not only affect your appearance but also make it difficult to chew your food or speak. Earlier, only dentures replaced the missing teeth in your mouth. But today, more advanced and superior options are available, and dental implants are one of them.

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots made using titanium. We place them in your jawbone under your gum line to mount artificial teeth and improve your appearance and tooth functionality. Implants restore your missing teeth permanently.

What are the Advantages of Dental Implants?

  • Dental implants are primarily a restorative procedure for missing teeth, but they are also looked upon as a cosmetic procedure that you may opt to improve your smile. The restoration looks similar to your natural teeth.
  • Implants are better than dentures. As we fit them permanently to your jawbone, they do not slip from their place in your mouth.
  • Dental implants support better oral health. The attachment of an implant doesn’t impact your surrounding teeth. The space left between each implant makes it easier to brush and floss.
  • Unlike dentures, implants are more comfortable to use and easier to manage.

How are Implants Attached?

During your first appointment, we will examine your teeth by taking your X-rays. We will also check if you are a good candidate for the procedure. If you do not have enough jawbone, we will perform a bone grafting surgery before the procedure.

For implants, we will make a small incision in your gums so that your jawbone becomes visible. We will attach a titanium stud (implant) to the jawbone and close the incision and give you some time to heal. The healing period, known as osseointegration, ensures that the implant fuses to your jawbone correctly.

We will also attach an abutment or base of the crown, acting as a connector for the restoration and allowing it to heal. The impressions of your teeth will be taken and sent to the dental lab for creating crowns. On the last appointment, we will attach the crowns to the abutment.

How to Care for Implants?

To maintain your implants in the long run, you should follow a regular oral care routine such as brushing and flossing your teeth. Brush under and around your restoration. It would be best if you did not use abrasive toothpaste as it could damage the restoration.
